SUMMARY
Reflection
Starting the Nightingale Public Health Association at Chapel Hill has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of high school When I first proposed the idea, I wanted to create a space where students could connect healthcare and policy in meaningful ways. What began as a small group of peers interested in health literacy has grown into one of the largest health-related club on campus. For me, I've never started a club completely from scratch. From Student Government to the school's Asian Student Association, I've always had a source of precedent and funds to pull from. Being the first to start something is an experience that has had tremendous impact on the way I think, and has boosted my respect for other club leaders.
Through this project, I learned that public health leadership requires far more than an understanding of data or medicine—it demands empathy, collaboration, and persistence. From drafting our bylaws to reaching out to local health departments, every step pushed me to think critically about how to make complex health issues accessible and relevant to my generation. I also developed a deeper appreciation for how policy directly affects everyday lives, particularly in underrepresented communities.
Project Impact
Founded the Chapter of Nightingale Public Health Association at school, a youth-led public health organization.

Reached over 150 students through in-person and online presence.
The only bipartisan policy-related club on campus!
PROJECTS TASKS

Page Week
10.00 hours participating in an awareness event | Compassion
Shadowed public servants from various departments. Learned communication skills over the four-day week.

Planning Club and getting approval
6.00 hours leading a club | Curiosity
I founded and currently lead the Nightingale Public Health Association chapter at Chapel Hill High, a student-led organization dedicated to improving public health literacy and engagement among youth in North Carolina. Our mission is to bridge the gap between policy, science, and community through accessible education, advocacy, and local partnerships.
I began over the summer by assembling a founding team of students interested in health policy, then established our organizational structure and bylaws. I filled out the club agenda, charter, and went through a rigorous auditing process through Student Government.

Publicity
2.00 hours advocating on social media | Connectedness
We created a club Instagram to stay connected with our community and also neighboring chapters of the Public Health Association.

Club Day
4.00 hours doing outreach | Connectedness
We got 50 people to join our club, becoming the largest policy based club on campus. We plan to host workshops on topics such as vaccine awareness, nutrition equity, and environmental health, and collaborate with local schools and public health professionals to design youth-friendly educational materials.

Project Outcomes & Reflection
2.00 hours leading an initiative | Compassion
Through planning this club, I learned that effective leadership in public health requires not only understanding policy but also communicating it in a way that is easily digestible. Building the chapter association from scratch challenged me to think systemically, and through the events we have planned for this year, such as online campaigns and supply drives, I hope that, beyond raising awareness, our work has encouraged CHHS students to see public health as a civic responsibility and a possible career path.
