Silver Cord
5601 NE 7th St, Des Moines, IA 50313, USA
Basic Information:
  • The Silver Cord Award is a distinguished volunteer service award available to Saydel High School students who demonstrate a desire to give back to their community. In order to be recognized with this elite award, students must earn a minimum 20 hours of community service/volunteering during their freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. In order to earn a Silver Cord, students  will need to have completed 160 hours of service during their high school career.  Special consideration will be given to students who move in late in their high school career. Recognition will take place during graduation, one of the highest recognitions a student can earn, by students wearing a silver cord.

If you are interested in participating in the Silver Cord program, enroll by completing an enrollment form and submitting it to the Principal's office.

After enrolling, students can begin volunteering. Students can contact organizations on the pre-approved list, or they can submit a pre-approval form for activities not on the list. A pre-approval form is required prior to the service activity (unless it is on the pre-approved list) and must be resubmitted each school year for ongoing activities. This prevents any misunderstanding of qualifying hours. The form must be completed and turned in/emailed to the Principal's office.  The Principal will email the student whether or not the service activity has been approved.

If your volunteer work is only a single time event, students should take a volunteer verification form with them the day of the event to have the supervisor complete. If the service is ongoing, at the end of each month, students should take their documentation form to their supervisor and have the supervisor complete the supervisor portion of the verification/reflection form. Forms should be submitted in the office within two weeks of completion of the service project.
