  • ReData (Recovery of Data): Digitizing Italy’s Historical Weather Records

ReData is a citizen-science project run by Meteonetwork, the University of Milan, and Politecnico di Milano that invites volunteers to help transcribe Italy’s historical meteorological data. The project aims to recover and digitize daily weather observations recorded in paper bulletins by the Royal Central Meteorological Office between about 1879 and 1940.

By participating, volunteers help rescue climate records that are vulnerable to decay and make them accessible for scientific use. These data become valuable inputs for climate research, helping to reconstruct past weather patterns, improve reanalysis datasets, and deepen our understanding of how climate has changed over time.
